Empowering Citizen Scientists to Make an Impact in St. Louis

What Is Community Science?

  • The terms citizen science and community science are often used interchangeably to describe public participation in scientific research. However, their meanings have evolved over time.
  • Originally, citizen science referred to projects where non-professional volunteers, such as hobbyists or students, collected data to help professional scientists. These projects were typically designed and led by the scientists.
  • In contrast, community science originally referred to research initiated by and for a specific community, with scientists serving in a supporting role. It could also describe citizen science projects that focused on local issues.
  • Today, the two terms are often blended to emphasize a more collaborative and inclusive approach. This modern definition highlights a partnership between scientists and individuals from all backgrounds who work together to investigate a common scientific interest. This is the definition we use for the Community Science Collaborative of Saint Louis.
